2018 Mercedes GLS

German car maker Mercedes is heading into new generation of the crossover vehicles. Many models will suffer major changes and one among them is the GLS. According to current plans, complete redesign is on the way, which is going to be presented on 2018 Mercedes GLS. This car gets new architecture, lowering the weight and increasing fuel economy. Nevertheless, attention is on the off-road skills, but details were not announced yet. We need to wait to get closer to release date to find out more about that.

2018 Mercedes GLS redesign

To improve its off-road capabilities, designers will probably increase ground clearance on the SUV. Other major change is on wheelbase length. Although it should be longer for 2018 year model, overall weight will be dropped for around 300 lbs. Further, that is going to increase mileage for around 20 percent, according to plans. We will see if this goal will be completed, but carmaker’s reputation is giving promising signals.

Inside the cabin a lot of luxurious features are to be installed. Outside, design highlight of new Mercedes GLS are its wheels, with dimensions of 20 inches for base models, and larger, 21- or 22-inch for higher tiers.

2018 Mercedes GLS powertrain

Speculations about 2018 Mercedes GLS are guessing there will be three drivetrains offered for crossover. First is a 4.7-l unit, capable to deliver around 350 hp and 330 lb-ft of torque. More power comes from 5.5-l V8. This unit could be useful for near 400 hp and probably over 400 lb-ft of torque. There is a V6 engine in the mix, with 3.0-l displacement. Turbocharged unit can make up to 240 hp. Transmission prepared for the 2018 GLS is seven-speed automated dual-clutch gearbox, with AWD 4matic system. Full variable torque distribution is also used on it.

2018 Mercedes GLS competition and price

Main competition to the luxurious 2018 Mercedes GLS will come again from Audi Q7 and Cadillac Escalade. Rival companies are also preparing new models, but Mercedes is in advantage because of the new generation of GLS. Nevertheless, respond will be quick. Base models of the 2018 GLS should keep the price of current crossover, of around $65,000 if company doesn’t want to loose pace with rivals.
